the%20Watershed%20Modeling%20Process%22%2C%22creators%22%3A%5B%7B%22creatorType%22%3A%22author%22%2C%22firstName%22%3A%22Autumn%20R.%22%2C%22lastName%22%3A%22Deitrick%22%7D%2C%7B%22creatorType%22%3A%22author%22%2C%22firstName%22%3A%22Sarah%20A.%22%2C%22lastName%22%3A%22Torhan%22%7D%2C%7B%22creatorType%22%3A%22author%22%2C%22firstName%22%3A%22Caitlin%20A.%22%2C%22lastName%22%3A%22Grady%22%7D%5D%2C%22abstractNote%22%3A%22Abstract%20%5Cn%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20Throughout%20the%20watershed%20modeling%20process%2C%20modelers%2C%20collaborators%2C%20and%20stakeholders%20make%20decisions%20about%20how%20to%20study%20various%20challenges%20that%20impact%20watersheds.%20To%20understand%20these%20decisions%2C%20we%20investigated%20values%20held%20by%20modelers%20who%20have%20worked%20or%20collaborated%20on%20projects%20within%20the%20Chesapeake%20Bay%20Watershed%20and%20their%20influence%20on%20decisions%20made%20during%20the%20modeling%20process.%20Using%20a%20mixed%5Cu2010methodological%20approach%2C%20we%20designed%20an%20online%20survey%20and%20semistructured%20interviews%20to%20evaluate%20these%20complexities.%20In%20total%2C%20we%20received%2027%20survey%20responses%20from%20Chesapeake%20Bay%20Watershed%20modelers%20and%20conducted%20four%20semistructured%20interviews.%20The%20results%20indicate%20that%20ethical%20and%20epistemic%20values%20impact%20every%20stage%20of%20the%20watershed%20modeling%20process.%20These%20values%20occur%20alongside%20decisions%2C%20motivations%2C%20outcomes%2C%20and%20objectives%20that%20often%20involve%20collaborators%20and%20stakeholders%20in%20addition%20to%20the%20modelers.%20Therefore%2C%20including%20these%20values%20in%20scientific%20discourse%20can%20increase%20transparency%20around%20watershed%20modeling%20that%20guides%20policy%20decision%20making%20processes.%20Our%20results%20articulate%20that%20a%20discussion%20of%20the%20ethical%20and%20epistemic%20values%20present%20throughout%20the%20watershed%20modeling%20process%20should%20be%20incorporated%20into%20model%20documentation%20to%20clearly%20explain%20assumptions%20and%20decisions.%20%5Cn%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%2C%20%20%5Cn%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20Plain%20Language%20Summary%20%5Cn%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20Scientists%20use%20watershed%20models%20to%20determine%20how%20activities%20like%20farming%20and%20land%20development%20impact%20our%20waterways.%20Watershed%20models%20are%20computer%5Cu2010based%20tools%20that%20allow%20the%20user%20to%20input%20information%2C%20such%20as%20land%20use%2C%20fertilizer%20use%2C%20and%20types%20of%20agricultural%20operations%2C%20to%20predict%20how%20these%20factors%20might%20contribute%20to%20pollution%20in%20waterways.%20Modelers%20often%20work%20alongside%20other%20people%20to%20determine%20what%20information%20should%20and%20should%20not%20be%20included%20in%20a%20model.%20During%20this%20process%2C%20modelers%20must%20make%20various%20decisions%20that%20can%20impact%20how%20the%20model%20predicts%20pollution%20levels%2C%20which%20has%20implications%20for%20policies%20established%20by%20decision%20makers.%20Like%20all%20people%2C%20modelers%20have%20their%20own%20values%20that%20can%20influence%20their%20decision%20making.%20Our%20work%20seeks%20to%20understand%20if%20and%20how%20values%20influence%20modelers%26%23039%3B%20decisions%20in%20their%20modeling%20process.%20To%20understand%20this%2C%20we%20surveyed%20and%20interviewed%20researchers%20in%20the%20Chesapeake%20Bay%20Watershed.%20Our%20results%20demonstrated%20that%20values%20indeed%20impact%20every%20stage%20of%20the%20watershed%20modeling%20process.%20Because%20values%20have%20an%20impact%2C%20we%20suggest%20that%20modelers%20should%20describe%20how%20these%20values%20influence%20decisions%20in%20watershed%20modeling%20reports.%20%5Cn%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%2C%20%20%5Cn%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20Key%20Points%20%5Cn%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%5Cn%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%5Cn%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%5Cn%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20Modelers%26%23039%3B%20ethical%20and%20epistemic%20values%20can%20impact%20decisions%20made%20at%20all%20stages%20of%20the%20watershed%20modeling%20process%20%5Cn%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%5Cn%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%5Cn%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20Values%5Cu2010informed%20mental%20models%20%28ViMMs%29%20are%20a%20tool%20used%20to%20describe%20how%20modelers%20make%20decisions%20and%20highlight%20the%20values%20that%20influence%20these%20decisions%20%5Cn%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%5Cn%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%5Cn%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20ViMMs%20can%20help%20modelers%20become%20more%20aware%20of%20their%20values%20and%20encourage%20the%20documentation%20of%20implicit%20decisions%20driven%20by%20values%22%2C%
