LEGIT is one of many projects that study how computer modeling is done and has agency in the world. Resulting studies are often published in disciplinary journals that relate to the computer modeling application such as hydrology or the energy transition. Even though the exchange among the studies would be fruitful, the disciplinary boundaries are seldomly or only coincidentally crossed and we tend to be unaware of each other’s work.

We want to build a community around studies of computer modeling, in order to bring people together who apply their critical lens to different modeling applications and who come from diverse backgrounds and disciplines. As computer modeling, we understand both numerical and statistical models. Studies around it can range across domains in science, policy and applications and span model building as well as model application. The focus of the group is the critical questioning of computer modeling but in a constructive manner, hence the label of “critical friends” (inspired by Becker, 2023).

CMCF includes a bibliography and we plan to include occasional online seminars to introduce us to each other’s work. There are more possibilities for future projects and for sure CMCF is meant to continue way beyond the LEGIT project.
